Certified journeypersons working in mining in Northern Ontario can earn more than $64/hour with base pay, overtime and other premiums. Apprentices can earn while they learn.

Homeownership can also be much more attainable. A typical home in the Toronto area costs about 10.7 times median after-tax household income, compared with 4.4 times in Timmins, 5.1 times in Thunder Bay and 6.2 times in Sudbury.
