The Porcupine Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is looking for two more teams to join the March 27-29, 2015 Ontario Mining Cup hockey tournament in Timmins, as well as additional sponsors to support the event.

Founded in 2013, the Ontario Mining Cup is on its way to becoming a premiere adult hockey tournament in the region, attracting hundreds of mining professionals and hockey aficionados from across the province to the historic Macintyre Arena. "From human resources, to geology to underground drillers, the tournament is host to a wide range of mining technical talent and all in the name of hockey fun," says Kyle Buckoll, Chairman of the CIM Porcupine Branch and Co-Chair of the Ontario Mining Cup. He adds that, "the tournament creates an amazing social atmosphere that is led by a $12,500 shot from center ice, live music, dinner and refreshments."

While it builds fellowship among local mines, suppliers and industry partners, and gives miners a chance to unleash their inner hockey hero, the tournament also represents a major fundraising effort. Proceeds from the tournament go towards post-secondary scholarships offered through the Haileybury School of Mines, as well as newly established local Timmins high school scholarships.

Looking for a chance to lace up your skates, join excited crowds in the stands, or open your wallet for a good cause? The organizers are still accepting team registrations for the final two spots in the tournament, both on the recreational and competitive levels. Likewise, companies are encouraged to register as sponsors

"We are very excited about the tournament growing so much bigger in size this year and hope that we continue the momentum moving forward," says Kayle Buckoll. "We look forward to seeing everyone on the ice for a fun weekend of hockey action."

When 16 industry-sponsored teams hit the ice this spring to compete for the coveted Ontario Mining Cup, we at the OMA will be cheering.
