CMJ - Mining in Ontario 2008
The Canadian Mining Journal has been the primary trade publication for the mining industry for more than 125 years. In its January issue every year, the magazine focuses on Ontario - Canada's leading mining jurisdiction. In cooperation with the Ontario Mining Association, the edition features articles about the OMA and newsworthy items of particular interest in this province.
The January 2008 edition's cover, which shows the ore face of a drift at FNX Mining's Podolsky mine in the Sudbury Basin, introduces you to the adventures of the animated characters Nick and Nicole. The inside of the issue highlights Ontario's new nickel mine developments ("Redstone and Shakespeare developments making headway") and partners Richmont Mines and Patricia Mining opening the Island Gold Mine ("Wawa area back in gold business").
This issue of the magazine also contains an editorial column ("Nice neighbours to have") that analyzes the OMA's representative mine study ("Ontario Mining: A Partner in Prosperity Building"). It concludes that an average sized representative mine can create more than 2,200 jobs, inject $278 million into the economy and generate $84 million in tax revenues for governments annually.
The article "Attracting the attention of tomorrow's employees" features the OMA educational video NickelQuest, which takes viewers on a virtual underground mine tour, and initiatives with Skills Canada Ontario. The OMA Education and Outreach Committee is working with Skills Canada Ontario to promote awareness of employment opportunities in the mining industry. The next edition of the SKILLS WORK book of Skills Canada Ontario, which targets high school audiences, will feature six mining jobs, information about the industry and a profile of Amy Laforge, geological technologist, for Xstrata Copper at the Kidd Mine in Timmins
At the OMA, Jeremy Wyeth ("New OMA chair"), Executive Vice president of De Beers Canada, has taken over as Chair of the Association succeeding Olivier Chatillon, former President of Omya Canada.
