CMJ– Mining in Ontario 2007
The Canadian Mining Journal has been the primary trade publication for the mining industry for more than a century. In its January issue ever year, the magazine focuses on Ontario - Canada's leading mining jurisdiction. In cooperation with the Ontario Mining Association, the edition features articles about the OMA and newsworthy items of particular interest in this province.
The January 2007 edition highlights the development of Xstrata's Mine D project in Timmins ("First stage of Kidd Creek's Mine D project complete") and changes in ownership of nickel operations (CVRD Inco and Xstrata Nicke: Sudbury's new guys in town). Both CVRD and Xstrata are among the world's largest mining companies. They operate globally and produce a wide range of mineral products.
This issue of the magazine also provides an update on the De Beers Canada project near Attawapiskat, ("The real value of Victor diamonds") which is destined to be Ontario's first diamond mine. The nearly $1 billion that De Beers will inject into the provincial economy is expected to create a cumulative GDP impact of $6.7 billion over the life of the mine. Of the $6.7 billion, $4.2 billion will stay in northeastern Ontario.
In presenting OMA initiatives, there is an article on the Association's economic study ("High-tech productivity powerhouse: Economic contribution of Ontario's mining industry"), an energy efficiency and conservation project of the OMA ("Leak hunting: Saving energy through compressed air lines") and a review of some the OMA 's activities at Queen's Park ("Ontario political leaders meet the miners: Unanimous support for mining").
At the OMA, Olivier Chatillon, President of Omya Canada, has taken over as Chair of the Association succeeding Allen Hayward, who retired from Xstrata Nickel. In interviews both Mr. Chatillon and Mr. Hayward speak about the strategies of the OMA and its future direction.
We think the magazine provides a flavour of what is going on at the Association and the provincial mining scene. Go to http://www.canadianminingjournal.com/oma/2007 and take a look.
