Education

Mining and minerals and earth sciences are part of the curriculum in Ontario. There are several grades in which these topics are part of the academic program in classrooms across the province. The Ontario Mining Association supports and works with the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada's MINING MATTERS program which puts hands educational resources in classrooms and assists in the training of teachers to present up-to-date lessons on mining and earth sciences.

The OMA will try to provide current information about mining, the skills needed by the industry and opportunities it offers. The Association tries to help students gain a greater understanding and appreciation of mining and its role as a responsible partner in society.

There are a number of resources available on the OMA website for teachers and students. They include the introductory booklet "Mining In Ontario: A Wealth of Opportunity/A Wealth of Benefits," access to the video "Mining New Opportunities," the Teacher's Resource and Speaker's guide which supplements that video, the latest edition of  "The Economic and Fiscal Contribution of the Mining Industry in Ontario" and the environmental book "Towards Greener Footprints." Also from the OMA website materials from selected issues of the Canadian Mining Journal can be found along with back editions of the Associations newsletter.

We encourage teachers and students to use the website and if you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please contact pmcbride@oma.on.ca and share your ideas.
