Dynamic Earth
A Dynamic Place to Showcase Mining's Dynamic Future
Since Dynamic Earth opened its doors in April 2003, this Science North attraction has welcomed more than 249,000 visitors into the world of earth sciences, mining and mining technology. The City of Greater Sudbury is the mining capital of Canada and this premier geology and mining attraction tells the stories that have been unearthed from the 1.8 billion year old rock of the Sudbury basin. Dynamic Earth features interactive exhibits and multimedia shows that highlight the area's unique geology and rich mining heritage. It is a place where people can gain knowledge, insight and understanding of the importance that earth sciences play in the world around us.
Inspiring Future Generations of Miners
The centre also highlights the role played by the mining industry in transforming the Earth's riches into usable products and provides the perfect backdrop to showcase mining as a viable and exciting career choice. In the next decade, the mining industry will be facing a labour shortage as the current generation of mining professionals retires. Dynamic Earth will play an important role in encouraging young people to consider mining as a career by showing them how exciting mining can be. Over 60,000 Ontarians visit Dynamic Earth each year, including close to 8,000 students in organized class visits. These are people who are ready to learn about mining.
Working Together
Dynamic Earth is an interactive earth sciences centre that encourages visitors to work and play with mining equipment and technologies. Visitors are also urged to learn about the geological forces that shaped the Earth, and explore the many different rocks and minerals found within the Sudbury region.
The support of private sector partners has resulted in a unique, and realistic experience for Dynamic Earth visitors. The centre has become an excellent location for many companies to showcase machinery, tools, communication systems and various other mining related products. Dynamic Earth is also proud to partner with mining supply and service companies to highlight unique innovations developed for the mining industry.
Expanding on a Great Idea
The construction of Dynamic Earth was planned in stages to allow expansion within a few years of opening. The 2008 season includes new experiences and further expansions, with more to come in 2009! Every new development is designed to broaden the visitor experience by increasing the capacity to present diversified content and changing exhibits.
Additions for 2008 include a Rock and Mineral Lab and Geology of Ontario exhibit in the Earth Gallery and a newly renovated Explora Mine and Mining Command Centre, offering visitors even more interactive experiences to discover! Visitors will also be introduced to a new multimedia experience about above-ground mining processing and sustainable mining, which will open May 16, 2008 in the new Xstrata Nickel Gallery. A new high-definition digital film Ring of Fire will erupt in the Atlas Copco Theatre, portraying the immense natural force of the great circle of volcanoes and seismic activity that rings the Pacific Ocean.
Dynamic Earth combines both above and underground experiences. Visitors will descend 7-storeys underground in a glass-enclosed elevator, while watching a state-of-the-art multimedia show projected onto rock walls and moving screens. An unforgettable underground tour also awaits, bearing witness to the transformation mining has undergone over the past 100 years.
This exciting expansion project is now in the final stages, which will serve to enhance the Dynamic Earth experience and ensure the centre continues to play an even larger role in educating young people in a fun and interactive way about the mining industry and the wide variety of career paths available in mining.
